Major Changes Included in openSUSE Leap 16.0

  • Enterprise-Aligned Base Platform

    • Leap 16 is now source‑ and binary‑aligned with SLES 16, enabling streamlined workload compatibility and future migration paths.

  • Security Enhancements

    • SELinux is enabled by default as the primary Linux Security Module.
    • AppArmor remains optional but is no longer the default.

  • Networking Changes

    • NetworkManager is the unified default networking backend across Leap 16.
    • Wicked is deprecated distribution-wide.

  • Configuration Layout Modernization

    • Adopted the /usr/etc model:
      • Vendor defaults → /usr/etc
      • Administrator overrides → /etc

    This avoids .rpmnew/ .rpmsave conflicts and supports modern update models.
